Day 58: At Home in Gig Harbor

A Walk to the Beach

On The Beach

With a marathon being run in town, we decided to stay around the house today. After watching the VT game in the morning (a 38-0 win over ODU-- sorry to all the ODU fans we know-- that's the Perdue family and Abe, well just the four of them I think), we decided to head down to the beach.

The house we are renting has beach access- but it is a long walk down a dirt path to the water.  The house is located on a hill about 300 feet off the beach, and the path began behind the house and wound down to the water.  It took far longer to walk down than to get back, because we weren't sure exactly what we were getting into.  Here is the beginning of the path into the rather thick woods:

Into the Woods We Had To Go to Find the Beach

About half way down we ran into a fenced dock where someone had built an elevator down to the beach.  It was quite a contraption, and looked like an interesting ride-- which we did not ride, as it was clearly a private affair.  Instead, we took the common path which included this foot bridge.  We had to be careful not to step on the loose boards or the raised nails.  And, I made Bob go first as I wasn't sure it would hold us both.

When we finally reached the beach, we took this picture so we could find the path back-- as it wasn't obvious.

Return To The Path Here

We think it was low tide, or the tide was going out while we were there because of the small sandy strip and large rocky beach.

Rocky Beach with Bird

Here is another view of that bird, with the water (Puget Sound) and a fishing boat with nets that appeared to be anchored off shore.

Once the bird vacated the rock I took its place.

Along with the gulls, there were also geese in the water.  Here they are riding the wake from a speed boat.

The following picture is an addition to the Bob & Lisa Hiking Boot Collection. (As we were unsure of the path we thought the hiking boots were the way to go, which turned out to be the right decision.)

And finally, the picture you have all been waiting for (and that Seth asked for this time), Bob touches water again.

The walk back to the house was faster and easier because we knew the path, and because it was mostly uphill.

When we got back, we took some time to relax and then we began our chores-- laundry, packing up boxes of books and souvenirs to send home, and plotting our schedule for tomorrow and the rest of next week.

Our plan is to head to the big Lemay Car museum in Tacoma and to go to the Museum of Glass if we don't take all day with the cars.

Now off to bed...
